How to Download Protected View-Only Images from Google Drive
- Open the image in Google Drive and copy the link from the address bar — or press Share, then Copy link.
- Paste the link in the box above and press Show image. This step reads only the first 64 KB, so it is near-instant.
- Check the file name, pixel dimensions and file size. You see exactly what you are about to download before spending any bandwidth.
- Click the image to open it full screen if you want a closer look first.
- Press Download original. The file is saved at full resolution, byte-for-byte identical to the one on Drive.
Nothing to install, no browser extension, no Google sign-in. Each download counts against your daily quota, the same as a document.
What if the image has download disabled?
It still works. When the owner turns off downloading, Google blocks the direct download path — but the preview path still serves the original file. This tool takes that path.
Measured on the very map image below, 05/09/2026:
- Google's own download button returns a “Can't download file” page — 1.7 KB of HTML, no image.
- This tool returns 15,592,113 bytes, exactly the size of the original file on Drive.
- No need to ask the owner, no need to make a copy, no Google sign-in.
The image must still be shared as “Anyone with the link”. A fully private image cannot be opened by any tool — and should not be.
Why right-click save loses quality
The Drive viewer shows a re-compressed copy so it loads fast. For the image below, the viewer's copy weighs a third of the original at the very same pixel count — right-click save throws that data away.
